I do not own the music. Shout out to some classic CCR! Thanks for a great song, one of many! Up Around the Bend. Perfect lake song!
Just a friend coming back to "the parking lot", and all the other folks at the dock that just happen to show up when they see one coming in. Lake Cumberland Kentucky.

    Where were the dead moved because I'm doubting they were all moved any where. Possibly only grave markers were moved. But history was lost when this lake was made. Homes were flooded Fact!! So were buiness & undoubtedly so were Cemeterys!! All for few to profit from tourism in this area.

      I thought Wolf Creek dam was built to reduce catastrophic flooding in a historically flood-prone region. I don't think the Army Corps of Engineers would be involved in a project that displaced people from their homes for tourism purposes.

    I’ve always been told cemetery island is over by the dam near Rowena marina. As a kid when the dam was being repaired and lake levels were low, I actually saw the caskets coming out of the dirt and the next weekend the army core of engineers was out there removing the caskets on the island. Maybe there are multiple islands? but cool clips love the lake!

    Wow, I do have a brand new colony and have a tree swallow that claimed one and have them moved, now have them moved to my neighbors yard but when we were getting a new fence its confused the tree swallows and they are back to my 12 unit gourd unit. And now the tree swallows keep coming back. Im going to tough this out and keep on trying. It’s great to see this video, if you have an established site vs a brand new site. Mine is so new I just brought it down and left it down while moving my “green goblin” I have 2 neighbors with martins and just waiting for 2nd years to move it. It’s April 24 so maybe none this year. The first ones I saw were here 4-7 and the 2nd years can be 4-5 weeks behind.

      I clean them out when the tree swallows leave (late Aug in KY) then, in the spring before they arrive (about 1st to 2nd week of March) I add just a starter amount of dried, soft pine needles about an inch deep. That way, it's ready for tree swallows or bluebirds, whoever claims it first.

    What do you do for a new 16 hole birdhouse not gourds.

    • @KYPurpleMartin
      @KYPurpleMartin 3 роки тому

      If you don't have martins yet, then you must close the entire house by blocking all the entrance holes. (I like foam swimming pool noodles/cut in pieces slightly larger than the entrance hole and force them in place blocking the entrance) Then, hang one gourd similar to the video. Under the house is fine and lower it as the birds follow the gourd to the shepherds hook on the ground. They (most likely) are attracted to the house and the location, so by adding the gourd, they almost always choose the entrance hole available. (reason you block the house) Good Luck and happy the birds have your attention!

    Thank you for posting this video! This video has been shared to help illustrate an important piece of ancestral family history for some of Wayne County, Kentucky’s earliest pioneer families: the Rousseaus. The content helps us show the result of displacement of a family cemetery that had been located at the mouth of White Oak Creek (formally King’s Creek) and the Cumberland River. The Rousseau family’s tobacco plantation (nicknamed “Montgomery Mansion”) was involved in the Civil War Battle of Mill Springs in the winter of 1862. The owner of the plantation at that time was John “Jack” Rousseau (1782-1870). He operated a ladies seminary school (finishing school) from of the property and was highly regarded as a commissioner of education in early Kentucky history. He helped to secure a popular vote for free public education and in 1847, Kentucky passed this idea into legislation. More on the Kentucky pioneer and why his grave is now underwater is available through www.JanelleMolony.com/Rousseau, or on social media @RousseauProject.

    Larry I am intersted in seeing your old video on the S&S Controoler in action, showing the starlings being captured. It was on UA-cam about 3 yrs ago, can it be seen privately? BTW thanks for being a supreme friend to our native birds, and an advocate for invasive species management. I am a PMCA supporter, and a landlord to Purple martins too!

    • @KYPurpleMartin

      Brian the video you are asking about was a Starling trap that I made. The Controller is made by Andrew Troyer. It's a Teter-toter simple design. I removed my video because I just couldn't refuse to build one when asked. Purple Martin's still get my time just in a different way now. I'm glad you liked the video. I still have a copy but I can't post it. I have a hard time saying no to protecting birds and someone would write me....I made step by step instructions and most people don't realize the time it takes to build one. I'm so glad there are many people like you... like me that watch out for and speak on birds behalf. Mine was called the Melcher NBT (nest box trap). Thanks for your kind words. Social media needs more kind words and less bullying. Thanks for supporting the PMCA...ensuring the future of Purple Martin's.

    • @brianbeidle8520
      @brianbeidle8520 3 роки тому

      @@KYPurpleMartin I am happy to see your reply. Your NBT video is reffered to in ________ _________ video, and that was how I found it. I assumed before you wrote me, UA-cam forced you to take the video down due to "complaints" about showing a distressed bird... some people like European starliongs, and heck, people in Europe see them as natives. I have posted to UA-cam privately, so others needed a code to watch my post. That would be one way to share any video you want a specific persone to see, and not the whole world! I still want to see the video in action, and can pay for it (upload it to a thumb drive, pay you on PayPal, ect.). I have big dreams to help native insectivores, and my Employer is set to hear my discertation on how we can use them to enhance pest control, save the environment, and still earn a profit. A NBT or S&S controller is just one piece of my plan... Similiar to you, I get overworked and overwhelmed by folks needing help with birds, so I totally get that. Are your instructions on how to build to the NBT anywhere online still? Like the Purple Martin Forum?? Best Wishes, Brian Beidle bugman3679@yahoo.com

      sharon chrisco, the fact that you are concerned and you know "what goes on behind closed doors" of our native birds....It's the worst part of the hobby. I made a video of how to trap house sparrows and some folks that have not seen the destruction by checking on your nest boxes, have reported it to UA-cam. Keep your birds safe by not allowing house sparrows and European Starlings to kill our native birds. Trap and shoot. I've read of others that it takes hundreds or even a few years, but you will begin to notice more happy native birds in your yard.

    Glen, there's nothing written in stone. But I read/hear that poles should be close enough to make the Martin's feel they are part of the colony. Meaning, (and just grabbing random numbers) you wouldn't want them further apart than 50 to 100 feet and not close enough to cause problems exiting at high speed to not be caught by flying predators. (Hawks) 20 to 30 feet might be a good number to provide enough room for the birds safety.
